NEW YORK STATE UNARMED TRAINING COURSES

There are three (3) unarmed courses required by New York State to obtain and keep your
Security Guard license as outlined below:
First Required Certification Course:
1. NYS Eight Hour Pre-Assignment Course
for Security Guards
Note: This course is required to be taken before initial employment and is necessary to apply for your initial New York State security guard (unarmed) registration (security guard license).
Designed by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, it is an excellent introductory course for security guards that is designed to give the student a basic working knowledge of their role in the industry.
The course lesson plans were prepared by criminal justice and security experts from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, and is presented by distinguished trainers from our school with many years of experience who will add some tactical and fire safety training to help you in real world situations.
NYS Pre-Assignment Course Outline
- Introduction — one-quarter (1/4) hour
Registration Introductions and experience of Instructor, Introduction of Students, Course Topics. School Rules/Housekeeping, Security Guard Act of 1992 and GBL 89 Overview/Requirements.
- Role of a Security Guard — one and one-quarter (1 ¼) hours
Provides an overview of the security industry and defines duties typically performed.
- Legal Powers and Limitations – two (2) hours
Defines the difference between security guards and law enforcement officers and explains custody and arrest procedures.
- Emergency Situations – one (1) hour
Provides an overview of different types of emergencies and methods of response.
- Communications and Public Relations – one (1) hour
Explains the oral and written communications process and identifies how perceptions affect interaction.
- Access Control – one-half (1/2) hour
Identifies elements of access control and defines the three general types of access control.
- Ethics and Conduct – one (1) hour
Defines and explains the importance of the Code of Ethics for security guards, and the necessity to do everything legally, morally, and ethically right.
- Review and Examination – one (1) hour

Second Required Certification Course:
2. NYS Sixteen Hour On-the-Job Training Course
for Security Guards
This two day course is required to be taken within ninety (90) days of initial employment as a security guard in New York State, and is needed to KEEP your license. The first day covers the same subjects as the NYS Eight Hour Pre-Assignment Course for Security Guards providing more information, and the second day is designed to give the student a baseline awareness of weapons of mass destruction and the Incident Command System (ICS), a component of the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
NYS 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course Outline
Note: Although the title of this suggests training done at the job site it is actually NYS certified instructor led and classroom based.
- Introduction — one-quarter (1/4) hour

Provides an overview of different types of emergencies and methods of response.
- Communications and Public Relations – one (1) hour
Explains the oral and written communications process and identifies how perceptions affect interaction.
- Access Control – one (1) hour
Identifies elements of access control and defines the three general types of access control.
- Ethics and Conduct – one (1) hour
Defines and explains the importance of the Code of Ethics for security guards, and the necessity to do everything legally, morally, and ethically right.
- Overview of the Incident Command System (ICS) – two (2) hours
- Terrorism and Related Topics – four (4) hours
Terrorism at the awareness level designed to make security guards
aware how terrorists operate, how to spot a possible terrorist attack in
the making (pre-attack), and what to do during (attack phase) and after
the attack (post attack). Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs),
Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and the US Department of
Homeland Security National Incident Management System
(NIMS)/Incident Command System (ICS) is also covered.
- Review and Examination – one (1) hour

Third Required Certification Course:
3. NYS Annual In-Service Training Course
for Security Guards
This course is a refresher course of many of the same subjects covered in the NYS Eight Hour Pre-Assignment Course for Security Guards with more focus on communications, advanced report writing, ethics and conduct and is required to be taken every year in order to KEEP and RENEW your security guard license.

I. Role of a Security Guard — 1.0 Hours
Provides a review of the security industry and duties typically
performed.
II. Legal Powers and Limitations – 1.0 Hours
Defines the difference between security guards and law enforcement officers and explains custody and arrest procedures.
III. Emergency Situations – 1.0 Hours
Provides an overview of different types of emergencies and methods
of response, and adds some fire safety training.
IV. Communications and Public Relations – 1.0 Hours
Explains the oral and written communications process and identifies
how perceptions affect interaction. This reviews some topics learned
in the Eight Hour Pre-Assignment Course and Sixteen Hour
On-the-Job Training Courses, and provides more information about
interpersonal communications.
V. Access Control – 1.0 Hours
Identifies elements of access control and defines the three general types of access control.
VI. Report Writing – 1.0 Hours
Provides more in-depth information written communications and
advance report writing techniques.
VII. Ethics and Conduct – 1.0 Hours
Defines and reviews the importance of the Code of Ethics for
security guards, and the necessity to do everything legally, morally,
and ethically right.
VIII. Communications and Public Relations (expanded) - 1.0 Hours
This block of instruction expands on topics presented in Lesson 4
(Communication and Public Relations) by teaching students a variety
of useful and practical skills that will help them in their role of security
guard.

NEW YORK STATE ARMED GUARD TRAINING COURSES ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are two (2) armed courses required by
New York State to obtain and keep your
Security Guard license as outlined below:
NYS Forty-Seven Hour Firearms Course for Security Guards
This course is required to be taken for those wishing to upgrade from unarmed to armed guard.
Note: Course pre-requisites are (1) valid NYS unarmed guard registration card, (2) valid NYS pistol permit, and (3) duty type weapon of at least 9mm or higher.

Eight Hour Annual Firearms Training Course for Security Guards
This course is required to be taken annually in order to maintain and renew your armed security guard registration.

Note: Course pre-requisites are (1) a valid NYS armed guard registration card, (2) valid NYS pistol permit, and (3) a duty type weapon of at least 9mm or higher.
